Supreme Court Issued Notice Allowing Kanwar Yatra 2021

The Supreme Court issued a notice to the Uttar Pradesh government over allowing Kanwar Yatra this year amid the fear of the third wave of Coronavirus.

The Supreme Court bench of Justice RF Nariman released a notice to the Uttar Pradesh government saying to proceed with the “Kanwar Yatra” this year. However, the hearing will made on July 16.

The UP govt allowed the annual ShivYatra in the state from July 25 and officials have asked to coordinate with neighboring states in order to follow and maintain Covid guidelines and standards.

‘Kanwariyas’ collect water from River Ganga at Haridwar to offer at Shiva temples in their areas as part of the Kanwar Yatra. Thousands of devotees from across the country travel on foot to collect the water.

On Tuesday, the Uttarakhand government canceled the Kanwar Yatra due to the looming threat of the third wave of Covid-19. It is for the second consecutive year when the Kanwar Yatra has been ruled out due to the pandemic in BJP-ruled Uttarakhand.
