Supreme Court’s Take On Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid Land Dispute

Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid land dispute has been going on for decades. What started as a religious dispute have now become a political issue as well. But today, Supreme Court is finally going to take up the report of mediation panel in hope to find a friendly solution.

For those who don’t know, the mediation panel was formed by SC on March 8. It was tasked to explore all the possibilities that can help the court to end this decades-old issue with an amicable settlement.

Who is going to lead this hearing?

According to the notice posted on the SC’s website, Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi will be leading the hearing. The court was to be assembled at 10:30 am to take up the matter. Today is the last day, as from tomorrow court will be closed till July. Apart from the Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi, SA Bobde, DY Chandrachud, Ashok Bhushan and SA Nazeer are also going to be the part of the bench of justice in this hearing.

In order to keep decision clean and non-biased, the court formed this mediation team which incorporates 3 members from both the Hindu and Muslim religions. Justice FM Khalifulah, a retired Supreme Court judge, is the chairman of the panel and Art of Living founder Sri Sri Ravi Shankar and senior advocate Sriram Panchu are the other mediators.

The court has already adjourned and their decision might not be what you were hoping for.

What settlement proposed by the mediation panel?

The mediation panel which was tasked to find all the possibility of an amicable settlement of the decades-old political/religious issue, has asked the Supreme Court for more time.

“We’re not going to tell you what progress has been made, that’s confidential,” said Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi the lead justice of Ram Janmabhoomi-Babri Masjid land dispute during the Friday hearing.

The court is now going on its summer vacation and has given mediation team time till August 15 to find a solution.

Are we ever going to find a solution to this over-stretched issue? Supreme Court’s mediation team should have done their work by now. But apparently, political interference has made it hard for anyone to come up with a friendly settlement. Let’s see if the mediation team will be able to find any way to clear off this decade-old issue on the next hearing.
