Qualcomm Launches New Mobile Processor With ISRO’s GPS

Global mobile chip giant Qualcomm has come up with 3 new chipsets that would have navigation support from ISRO’s GPS. The move that is a boost to Made-in-India GPS alternative chips has been made possible by coming together of the two organizations.

The three new chipsets namely Snapdragon 720G, 662 and 460 would have Navigation support from ISRO’s (Indian Space Reserach Organization) Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System (NavIC). The processors would be placed on Android run smartphones.

Popular Chinese smartphone brands Xiaomi and Realme have provide confirmations that they would be launching smartphones with NavIC support based on the new Snapdragon chipsets soon.

GPS which is seen as synonyms with navigation is U.S’s own navigation satellite system. Countries like Russia, China have their own Navigation satellites named GLONASS, and BeiDou while European Union has it’s Galileo.

India’s own navigation satellite system (NavIC) was launched in the year 2016. ISRO’s NavIC has a total of 8 satellites as a part of its navigation system. Out of these 7 would be used for providing positioning, location, navigation, and timing (PNT) services while another one will offer messaging services (IRNSS-1A).
