In a protest against the stringent traffic rules levied in the country from Sept 1, United Front of Transport Associations (UFTA) has called a day-long strike on September 19. Amid the strike, commuters across the NCR region will have to face severe public transportation woes. Moreover, several schools have also been shut down for a day, due to a lack of public transportation.
The move comes after the government implemented traffic rules as per the amended Motor Vehicle Act 2019. The amendments, as per the government, have been made to make Indian roads safer by keeping traffic defaulters in check. From September 1, 63 clauses from the bill that sought to amend the initial Motor Vehicles Act have been implemented.
However, several states including Gujarat and West Bengal are either eyeing to reduce the fines, or entirely rejecting the new amendments.
The strike will remain in force from 6 am to 10 pm and will hit Delhi’s daily routine. UFTA is also expecting a reply from Arvind Kerjirwal as to why he hasn’t considered cutting penalties.

Additional Demands
Apart from penalty cuts, the body has additional demands including benefits like medical facilities, insurance, as well as an extension in free parking time at railway stations and airports.

“You’ve seen the hefty challans that are being issued for very petty violations. A vehicle is suddenly halted and huge challan is issued which the drivers are unable to pay,” said UFTA President Kultaran Singh Atwal.
Notably, several schools have urged parents to arrange transportation for their kids.
