NHAI To Launch Toll Payments Via Prepaid Cards On National Highways

After FASTag, the government of India is now planning to launch new touch-and-go type prepaid cards for commuters on the National Highways. The card, that can make payments by just tapping it on the machine, will facilitate faster toll transactions and reduce the time one spends at the toll plazas on the national highways.

Once the new payment system is live, there would be only one lane at the toll plaza that would accept payment in cash. Earlier, the government has made it mandatory for everyone to get a FASTag for their vehicles.

Currently, the NHAI is inviting bids from firms that can implement this system.

The final bidder, as per the requirement of the tender document, will need to install at least two dedicated point-of-sales (PoS) manpower in three shifts for card recharge, issuance, top-up facility, and cash management at each national highway (NH) toll plaza for the first three months.

The cost for the prepaid cards would be around ₹50 that’s to be used only at hybrid lanes on NHs.

An NHAI official said, “There is a dire need to reduce the cash transactions, which take more time and cause long queues at the toll plazas. Long queues on “hybrid” lanes often prompt drivers to enter the FASTag lanes even when the vehicles don’t have the smart tag and this causes congestion on these dedicated lanes.”
