Landlords Can’t Take Rent From Workers Orders Centre After 1000s Gather At Bus Stands To Reach Home

A day after thousands of workers migrant workers gathered at the Anand Vihar bus station to reach their respective home amidst lockdown, the Ministry of Home Affairs has asked the states to provide them food and shelter. The ministry has also asked to put the migrant workers returning to home town under 14 days quarantine and ensure they don’t transfer the virus (if infected) to others.

The order further added that tenants will not ask poor workers and migrants in the country to pay their rents for one month. This follows the government orders to the employers to pay the workers in full and not take away their jobs irrespective of the fact that they are providing their skills during the lockdown period or not.

One who fails to adhere to any of these orders will have to face stringent legal actions, the government had said.

“The states and Union territories shall ensure adequate arrangements of temporary shelters, and provisions of food etc. for the poor and needy people, including migrant labourers, stranded due to lockdown measures in their respective areas,” a Home Ministry order to the states read.

“The migrant people who have moved out to reach to their home states/home towns, must be kept in the nearest shelter by the respective state/union territory government quarantine facilities after proper screening for a minimum period of 14 days,” it added.

Amidst a 21-day lockdown enforced by the government of India, stories of 1000s of migrants workers walking 1000s of kilometers to reach their homes began doing the rounds. As the government noticed the same, Yogi Adtiyanath said that the UP government will arrange 1,000 buses to take these migrants to their homes. Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal also said that he will press 200 DTC buses for the initiative.

As soon as the news broke out 1000’s of such workers desperate to reach the safety of their home gathered at the Anand Vihar bus stand violating the PM’s order to maintain social distancing.

“You fear the disease, living on the streets. But I fear hunger more, not corona,” a worker said.
