India’s Rank Drops From 101 To 107th In Global Hunger Index

India dropped down to 107th rank in the Global Hunger Index or GHI 2022 from its last position of 101 in 2021. GHI rank of India is calculated out of 121 countries, and this year India falls behind Pakistan, Nepal, and Bhutan.

Global Hunger Index Rankings

According to the official website data of the Global Hunger Index, which is responsible for tracking and ranking countries on the basis of hunger and malnutrition ratio, seventeen countries including China, Turkey, and Kuwait got placed under the fifth rank.

P Chidambaram, Congress MP, after noticing the data, said that the score has slashed down since 2014 during the 8 years of the Narendra Modi-led government.

“When will the Hon’ble PM address real issues like malnutrition, hunger, and stunting and wasting among children?” he questioned with a tweet.

The report, which was created by “The Irish aid agency Concern Worldwide and German organization WeltHungerHilfe”, marks the Hunger problem in India as ‘serious’.

In 2021 also, India was ranked 101 out of 116 countries and currently, the progress decreased when it got ranked 107 out of 121 countries. The GHI score of India slashed down between the range of 28.2 – 29.1 from 2014 to 2022, which was 38.8 in 2000.

The Government denied the facts shown by the reports last year, they termed it “shocking” and said it is “devoid of ground reality”. They questioned the calculation methodology of the Global Hunger Index and denoted it as “unscientific”.

“It is shocking to find that the Global Hunger Report 2021 has lowered the rank of India on the basis of FAO (UN’s Food and Agriculture Organisation) estimate on the proportion of the undernourished population, which is found to be devoid of ground reality and facts and suffers from serious methodological issues. The publishing agencies of the Global Hunger Report, Concern Worldwide, and Welt Hunger Hilfe, have not done their due diligence before releasing the report”, reads the statement made by the Government.

“The methodology used by FAO is unscientific. They have based their assessment on the results of a ‘four question’ opinion poll, which was conducted telephonically by Gallup. There is no scientific methodology to measure undernourishment like the availability of food grains per capita during the period. The scientific measurement of undernourishment would require measurement of weight and height, whereas the methodology involved here is based on Gallup poll based on a pure telephonic estimate of the population”, further said.
