If reports are anything to go by, the goverenemnt of India is testing an alternative to the WhatsApp app called ‘Sandes’. The app, as per the report, has already been made and is now being tested by ministry officials.
Though no details of the app launch are available just yet, but if you want to see the app for yourself, you can do it by simply visiting gims.gov.in. Here, you will notice a portal that says ‘Sandes’.
The Sandes app is like any other messaging app with features that allow you to send instant messages. The National Informatics Centre, a branch under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, handles the backend of the Sandes Application.

Meanwhile, if you go forward with trying to log into the portal using the ‘sign-in with Sandes OTP’ option, you will be flashed with the message, “This authentication method is applicable for authorized government officials.”
The app comes weeks after the Government of India criticised the messaging app, WhatsApp’s, new privacy policy and accused it of treating different countries differently when it comes to policy change in direct reference to the instance of different privacy policies for the European Union and India.

The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MEITY) has recently even asked WhatsApp’s global chief executive officer Will Cathcart, to provide the goverenemnt details about the data that it will collect from the Indian citizens.

Amidst criticism, WhatsApp has delayed the introduction of the new privacy policy to 15 May from 8 February.
