New Indian Passports Will Carry A “Lotus” Symbol For This Reason

A Lotus symbol is all set to be printed on the new Indian passports soon, said the Ministry of External Affairs. The symbol, as per the ministry, is a part of enhanced security features to identify fake passports.

When opposed by the opposition in the Lok Sabha, the MEA also clarified that security features would involve the use of other national symbols as well on rotation.

Raising the issue during Zero Hour, M.K. Raghavan argued that by printing lotus on the passport, the government is trying to “saffronise” the country, with the Lotus being the political symbol of the BJP.

However, refuting this claim, MEA spokesperson Ravvesh Kumar said that “this symbol is our national flower and is part of the enhanced security features to identify fake passports.”

Kumar further added that the security feature has been introduced as part of the International Civil Aviation Organization.

“Apart from the lotus, other national symbols will be used on rotation. Right now, it is lotus and then next month there will be something else. These are symbols connected with India, such as the national flower or the national animal,” he said.
