There has been a lot of buzz in and around the amended Motor Vehicle Act 2019 over the past couple of weeks. The Centre has considerably made amendments to the Act (which comes into effect from September 1) to keep traffic defaulters in check. The same has led to people having to pay whopping fines – in case they break a traffic rule – which were peanuts before the amendments were made. For now, 63 clauses from the bill that sought to amend the initial Motor Vehicles Act have been implemented.
So in case you are not aware as to what the updated clauses entail, here is a list. And trust me, it’s terrifying.
Updated Fines
➤ General Penalty – First offence-fine, which was Rs. 100 earlier, has been increased to Rs. 500 increasing to Rs 1,500 in case of second-offence.
➤ Violation Of Road Regulation – Rs 500
➤ Driving Without License – Fine of Rs 5,000
➤ Oversize Vehicles – Rs 5,000
➤ Acting As A Conductor After Disqualification – Fine up to Rs 10,000
➤ Driving Despite Disqualification – Fine of Rs 10,000
➤ Unauthorized Use Of Vehicles Without A License – Fine of Rs 5,000
➤ Travelling Without A Ticket – Fine up to Rs 500
➤ Disobedience Of Orders Of Authorities And Refusal To Give Information – Fine up to Rs 2,000
➤ Penalty Relating To Construction, Maintenance, Sale And Alteration Of Motor Vehicles And Components – Imprisonment for up to 1 year and/or fine up to Rs 1,00,000 per vehicle.
➤ Sale Of Critical Safety Component In Violation Of Rules – Imprisonment for up to 1 year and/or fine of Rs 1,00,000 per component.
➤ Over-Speeding – The amended over speeding charges are Rs 1,000 to Rs 2,000 for LMV; Rs 2,000 to Rs 4,000 for a medium passenger or goods vehicles; Second subsequent offence-impounding of driving license.
➤ Penalty For Driving When Mentally Or Physically Unfit To Drive – fine up to Rs 1,000
➤ Drunken Driving – fine has been increased to Rs 10,000 and/or imprisonment up to six months.
➤ Alteration Of Retrofitting In Contravention Of Rules – Imprisonment for up to six months and/or fine of Rs 5,000 per alteration.
➤ Penalty For Dangerous/Rash Driving – First offence could cause you six months in jail and/or fine Rs 1,000 to Rs 5,000.
➤ Penalty For Offences Relating To Accident (Section 132 (I), 133 And 134) – First offence – fine up to Rs 5,000 and/or imprisonment of 6 months; second offence- fine up to Rs 10,000 and/or imprisonment of 1 year.
