In the AICTE handbook 2020-2021, All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has announced that physics and mathematics will not be mandatory for engineering students from the upcoming academic year 2020-2021 in line with the new National Education Policy 2020 that focuses on delivering technical education in Indian languages.
However, the AICTE has made Physics and Mathematics optional in class 12th for admission in BTech and BE courses from Technical Education. Additionally, they also said that from 2022 onwards, Mathematics and Physics will be mandatory in class 10th for admission to undergraduate courses in technology and engineering.
Updated Eligibility Criteria By AICTE
In the recent announcement, the AICTE has provided lists of 14 subjects —chemistry, physics, mathematics, electronics, computer science, biology, information technology, biotechnology, informatics practices, engineering graphics, technical vocational subject, entrepreneurship, and business studies.
Students willing to apply for undergraduate courses in engineering and technology must pass in any three subjects on the list. Moreover, they must have scored at least 45 per cent marks in class 12th board exam.

As per the Approval Process Handbook released by AICTE – “Universities will provide courses like physics, mathematics, engineering drawing, and more, for the students who are from different backgrounds. Hence, the technical education officials are offering engineering courses for those who are coming from “diverse backgrounds” supporting its regulations under National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. It generally specifies that no hard separations to be there between the sciences, arts, vocational, and commerce education. Moreover, scholars will get the option of subjects to study and increased flexibility, so that they can set their life plans and paths of study accordingly.

M.P. Poonia (AICTE vice-chairman) says that “We have associated our regulations with the National Education Policy as per the future possibility. It is done so that the students coming from commerce background can easily pursue engineering courses just bypassing any of the three from the 14 subjects. Also, must ensure that they must score a minimum of 45 per cent marks.
As of now, the study of chemistry, physics, and mathematics is mandatory for students in class 12 to apply for admission in undergraduate-level technology and engineering courses. Engineering and technology colleges generally welcome students based on entrance exam scores and class 12 board exam scores as well.
