Eyeing the ongoing Navratri celebration across the country which ends with idol immersions into the water bodies, the Central government is considering steps to ensure the rivers across the country do not get fall prey to celebrations.

National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) has issued a 15-point directive to prevent the immersion of idols in the Ganga and its tributaries during the festival season. As per the directive, a fine of Rs. 50,000 will be imposed on violators. The same applies to 11 states that have Ganga basins.
